  • AIR Model: A Teaching Tool for Cultivating Reflective Ethical Inquiry
by Perrin Cohen, Melissa McDaniels and Donna Qualters

The AIR model we describe in this article is a practical framework for cultivating reflective inquiry into ethical issues that students, faculty, and administrators experience in the midst of busy daily lives and encounter in classroom discussions in a discipline field. The model is highly adaptable to academic and workplace settings and enables students to clarify and refine their ethical thinking and make more caring, compassionate, and respectful choices. Quantitative and qualitative assessment indicates that students who use AIR as an organizing framework become more empowered and competent to engage in reflective ethical inquiry.

Recent workshops and conference presentations:
  • Creating Emergent Ethical Leadership in a University-Wide Setting

Our cultural perspective in the United States regarding institutions of higher education as "ivory towers" often leaves the impression that the academy should operate under the highest ethical standards. Yet scandal is not new to the academy. There have been incidences of presidential misconduct (Chronicle, September 26, 2005), student misconduct, and faculty improprieties. The question is not whether the academy should be held to a higher standard than any other institution, the question becomes who is responsible for anticipating and responding to ethical breaches on campus?

Paper presented at the "Illuminating Ethical Leadership: Faculty and Administrative Roles" Conference, RTM Institute for Leadership, Ethics & Character, October 7-8, 2005, Atlanta.

  • AIR: An adaptive Strategy for Meeting Ethical Challenges in Nanoscience
In this AIRsm workshop, nanoscientists (students & professionals) acquire the ability to manage ethical issues (e.g. harm, honesty, fairness) in research and applied settings so as to avoid damage to reputation, morale and productivity. Acquired abilities include awareness of oneself, others, and current circumstances regarding ethical concerns as well as ability to be confident, resourceful, proactive, and a collaborative problem solver. Participants gain experience in using the AIR Modelsm by applying it to "real life" scenarios.
  • AIR Model: Using Ethical Inquiry to Promote Student Learning and Development
In this AIRsm workshop, school teachers discuss the need for ethical inquiry in educational settings and learn how the AIR model is used as a pedagogical framework for promoting reflective ethical inquiry with students and colleagues. Teachers learn how such inquiry can take many forms, occur in diverse settings and have practical benefits for individuals, schools and other stakeholders. Participants gain experience in using the AIR model in elementary, middle and high schools settings.
